- Should I enroll in Case's Student Medical Plan?
The Graduate Student Senate Health Care Committee has been working hard to improve your health care and health insurance benefits over the summer. Our goals this year are to facilitate more effective communication with students about the health benefits offered to them; to improve the Student Medical Plan package; to assess Case’s competitiveness in comparison with other institutions regarding the health care it offers its students; and to establish permanent links between students and the Administration regarding health care.
What's New in 2009-2010?
Optional dental coverage through Aetna in addition to the discounts you receive at the dental school. Even if you are not on the Student Medical Plan, you can enroll in these optional dental plans. Dependents can also enroll in these plans:
Aetna Advantage Dental: a dental HMO, cost = $125 for the year (student)
Vital Savings Dental: dental care discounts, cost =$25 (student)
Learn more about the pros and cons of each plan here. To enroll in these plans, go here.
Monthly Payments: Pay for your $660/semester health fee on a monthly basis rather than all at once through the E-Z Pay service. For more information, go here. You’ll find the link to the form you need at the bottom of the page.
Well child visits on the dependent plan are covered up to $500 annually. For more details, go here.
Making the Most of the Student Medical Plan (aka “Read this if you want to save money.")
You should get preventive care through University Health Services. This includes annual check-ups and well-woman exams. If you go to another provider, your Case health plan will not cover it. This can get very expensive.
If you need something other than preventive care, you can go to University Health Services (for free or cheap) or an Aetna provider (and you pay 20% of the bill). You can find Aetna providers at www.aetnastudenthealth.com. You do not need a referral.

Your prescription coverage is through EnvisionRx. You need a separate insurance card for Envision. Print it here.
You are automatically eligible for dental care at Case’s dental school. This year, you also have the option of enrolling in two different Aetna plans:
Aetna Advantage Dental: a dental care HMO; cost = $120 for 12 months
Aetna Vital Savings: dental care discounts; cost = $25 for 12 months
-
You are automatically eligible for vision discounts through Aetna. For more information, go here.

Should I enroll in Case’s Student Medical Plan?
We can’t answer this question for you, but here are some things to consider.
You will automatically be enrolled in Case’s Student Medical Plan if you do not waive the health fee of $660/semester when you enroll for classes through SIS. If you waive the health fee, you need to have insurance through another source. If you want to waive the health fee, you must do it by the end of the add/drop period.
Case’s plan is $110 per month. Even if you can get coverage through a parent, spouse, partner, or employer, Case’s plan might be a better deal for you.
If your parents are Ohio residents, you can stay on their health insurance until you turn 28. This is a change from last year. The age of eligibility to stay on your parents’ plan differs by state.
Case’s Student Medical Plan has no pre-existing conditions clause.
Even if you do not have the Student Medical Plan, you can still use University Health Services, and you can also enroll in the optional dental benefits offered through Aetna.
In the end, it’s up to you where you get your health insurance. The important thing is to protect your health and financial well-being by having health insurance that meets your needs so you can concentrate on other things – like classes, research, and where to find free food.
