END OF THE YEAR UPDATE:
• After the concept was introduced to them by then-At-Large Executive Kevin Speer in the last AASL meeting of the 2006-2007 academic year, the AASL committee was kept up to speed with efforts made toward completing the Mentoring Guidebook for Faculty. Thalia Dorwick, AASL Chair, and the rest of the Committee were very supportive of the endeavor.
• Graduate students were invited to the October ’07 meeting of the AASL Committee to speak on questions related to the University’s efforts to develop the “University Strategic Plan.” Jennifer Malers (Chemical Engineering), Craig Rudick (Astronomy), and Robert Peterson (Sociology) did a fine job of addressing these questions. Jennifer was the main speaker, and she delivered a very high impact address to the AASL Committee that will be remembered for years to come. Issues of the poor communication structure, the strife among financial resources to support research, graduate students being treated like laborers, high healthcare costs, and more were highlighted.
• There will be one more meeting of the AASL before the Fall ’09 term begins. |
