2008-2009

2007-2008

END OF THE YEAR UPDATE:

1)Strategic Planning: At the core of strategic planning for graduate studies is the goal to Enrich and Advance Graduate Education: Grow High-Quality Graduate Programs in CSE’s High-Priority Research Areas and Create Programs for High-Demand Professional Degrees. The strategies that the committee has identified to realize these goals are:
1. Grow and Sustain World-Class Graduate Research Programs.
2. Provide High-Impact and Quality Professional Programs.
3. Recruit Diverse Top-Tier Graduate Students.
The GSC (CSE Graduate Studies Committee) proposes a clear emphasis on multidisciplinary research and on removing obstacles hindering such research. The strategic plan should accommodate differences between the individual departments.
2)Graduate Fellowships: To increase the number of graduate students supported by fellowships, the GSC proposes:

  • Designation of an administrative designated position for facilitating and assisting graduate students students and faculty to search out and compose applications for fellowships and grants
  • Reallocation of effort to attain faculty-driven training grants that support groups of students.

3) Graduate Student Recruiting: Re-examination of the Teaching Assistant (TA) system and Case Prime Fellowships will be vital to creating a funding safety net needed to acquire and retain top talent.   Additionally, the GSC has reviewed innovative approaches to graduate student recruiting in several departments

Previous Updates:

Update from Feb. 19, 2008
1)There is a new course action form online that has no instructions, will alert proper people.
2)Course action forms for new engineering graduate courses were examined and approved.
3)Most of the discussion was about increasing fellowship opportunities for grad students.  A staff member could be in charge of overseeing fellowship opportunities. Everyone agrees that this should be a CSE issue.  There was also discussion about trying to have a big push to apply for national fellowships starting next fall to show the need for a staff person to aid in these matters.
