Mentoring Committee

2008-2009

In Attendance:Lucas ODonnell, Sarah Busch, Craig Rudick, Kevin Speer, Jimmy Harris
Absent: Sarah Kyker, Brett Hoover, Antje Daub, Cara Henry

The meeting was an overview of the work ahead and the work the committee performed last year. After Craig and Kevin informed everyone why the committee was started and the process of which they constructed the Faculty Handbook during the 2008-2009 year.

The work to be completed this year includes: Creation of the Mentor Survey Report, endorsement of the Faculty Handbook by the Fac. Senate, creation of the student version of the mentoring handbook, and implementation plans to improve mentoring. It was suggested that a Student Bill of Rights should be incorporated into the Student version of the Handbook.

The task for the next meeting is review the mentor survey data for points to include in the report.

2007-2008

END OF THE YEAR UPDATE: As of April 3, 2008, the Mentoring Committee is a standing committee of the GSS.  Our goal is to find ways to improve the quality of mentoring that graduate students receive during their education at CWRU.  The committee meets approximately every month, but on an as-needed basis.  The committee was extremely active this year, producing two major accomplishments:
1. A mentoring survey was constructed and distributed to graduate students to measure the quality of mentoring currently being provided at CWRU.  A report on the results is forthcoming.
2. We completed A Mentoring Guidebook for Faculty, which outlines many of the ways in which CWRU faculty can be excellent graduate student mentors.  The Guidebook is currently being reviewed by the Faculty Senate Committee on Graduate Studies.  Our next major project will be to draft a companion handbook for graduate students on how to effectively be mentored.
