A message from the GSS President
|
SAMANTHA SCHARTMAN, PRESIDENT, GRADUATE STUDENT SENATE – So as a new school year begins we are ushered through a series of meetings and orientations, given schedules and lists of books to have read the week before you got the list....We scam free food from eager vendors waiting to welcome back their treasured customers and watch with entertainment as our esteemed faculty parade around the campus in those Halloween costumes we know as academic regalia.
But for the GSS, our “semester” began two months ago with our executive retreat. At that gathering we outlined goals, highlighted motivations, and shared a few laughs while getting acquainted with new or returning colleagues/fellow graduate students. For all the fun we had, we can proudly say that some great things came out of that first strategy meeting; first, we created two great brochures (one outlining healthcare at Case, the other a collection of general information) that were given out to incoming graduate students to help them acclimate, our information officer singlehandedly overhauled our website – making it function better, while adding HUGE amounts of information! We also recruited school senators, outlined budgets for the coming year, and have begun drafting bylaws to create an Ad Hoc Diversity committee that will help us reach out to Case’s international and minority communities and understand their needs. Finally, we have started this newsletter that you’re reading right now!!
But that’s not all! The GSS is busy working round the clock to bring the graduate population at Case opportunities for professional development, events at which to kick back and relax, we’re working on resources to make life as a grad student easier (see website), and working with administration to improve policy and procedure that will impact mentoring and conflict resolution.
This year will definitely be a busy and exciting year and while our current execs are ready to meet this year’s challenges, we always need more input, more advice, more presence, and participation. Our doors are always open (our General Assembly meetings are open to all grad students).
We hope to see you soon!
Samantha Schartman
