Two New Officers / Diversity Committee / Mentoring Chair Vacancy

QUENTIN JAMIESON, GSS INFORMATION OFFICER — At the October General Assembly meeting, the Senate elected two new officers: Secretary Chris Peverada from the Department of Cognitive Linguistics (M.A.) and Treasurer Tess Pottinger from the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics (Ph.D., Genetic Epidemiology).
    Ad Hoc Committee on Diversity and Inclusion: The Senate has created a new committee led by Diwakar Vadapalli from the Department of Social Welfare (Ph.D.) at MSASS. Diwakar has been instrumental in the creation of the charge and vision of this committee which you can read here: ACDI Charge. If you are interested in becoming a part of this committee, please email Diwakar at diwakarvk@gmail.com.
    Mentoring Committee Chair Vacancy: Finally, following the release of the GSS Mentee Guidebook for Students, Cassie Freudenrich has stepped down as Chair of the GSS Mentoring Committee. The committee is now exploring the creation of a mentoring program. The Senate has opened up nominations for this position. If you are interested in leading the committee, or know someone that is, please nominate by e-mailing gsselections@case.edu by Wednesday, October 28th. If you are interested in joining the Mentoring Committee, please email GSS Vice President Tim Franke (gssvp@case.edu). No prior experience is necessary!

TOM BULEA, CHAIR, GSS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE —
On Friday, 10/16, the GSS Professional Development Committee sponsored a workshop titled: "Preparing for Academic and Industry Interviews."  Kim Paik from the Case Career Center discussed effective strategies to enhance students' chances of a successful interview experience.  The presentation included useful resources for researching companies, techniques for structuring responses to interviewer's questions, tips on navigating behavior based interviews, and examples for show casing your skill set to employers.  The presentation and accompanying handout can be found here: Presentation | Handout. Conversational English (new time)

MARIELENA MAGGIO, PROGRAM COORDINATOR, INTERNATIONAL STUDENT SERVICXES — The conversational group for international students who are looking for opportunities to practice and improve their spoken English has CHANGED ITS MEETING TIME. They will meet 30 minutes later from 12:30pm to 1:30pm at Educational Services for Students (ESS) in Sears 470. Bring your lunch and join us for a chance to casually practice speaking English. Halloween Party / Homecoming

JOE GUTOWSKI, ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF THWING CENTER FOR PROGRAMS AND LEADERSHIP — "HALLOWEEN AT HOME" We are bringing Case's best Halloween tradition to campus this year. This annual tradition brings the entire Case community together, including faculty, staff, students, alumni, and their families. Activities are free and in the past have included:

THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE: Help Reach Out to Those in Need

Also at "HALLOWEEN AT HOME," Frieberger Field from 5-10pm: This year, in collaboration with the Office of Multicultural Affairs Turkey Drive and the Family Weekend Committee's "Stuff the Bag" service project, we are asking attendees to donate non-perishable food items that can be given to local Cleveland area families for the Thanksgiving holiday. The following food items will be given to needy families, along with a turkey, so any donations of the following items would be appreciated: Boxes of Instant Stuffing, Boxes of Instant Mashed potatoes, boxes of Cornbread or ANY non-perishable food item!

Linda Silakoski, an immigration attorney in Painesville will be discussing "Immigration Reform – Fix it and Get it Right!" The meeting is open to the public.
